Shoemaker’s Five Hit Day Leads Baseball to NAC Split at Cobleskill

Cobleskill, NY – Nick Shoemaker recorded five hits on the day including three in the nightcap to lead the SUNY Canton baseball team to a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) split at SUNY Cobleskill on Friday. The Tigers won the opener 2-1 in eight innings before Canton bounced back with a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos got on the board first scoring an unearned run in the first when Shoemaker scored on a Nick Barone RBI ground out.
  • In a pitcher's duel neither team would score again until the sixth inning when the Fighting Tigers tied things up on an RBI ground out.
  • Shoemaker would move into scoring position with one out in the seventh on a sacrifice from Dylan Allen but a pair of strike outs got Cobleskill out of a jam.
  • The hosts had one runner reach with two outs in the bottom of the inning on an error but a fly out sent the game to extras.
  • Edilberto Rosado drew a two out walk in the top of the eighth but a fly out ended Canton's at-bats
  • The Tigers leadoff hitter in the bottom of the frame reached on an error advancing to second. A bunt single and steal left a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs before Matthew Snyder hit a walk-off single to score the game-winning run.
  • Shoemaker led the Roos with two hits and one run, while six other Canton players had one hit each.
  • Hunter LaValley took the no-decision allowing one earned run and just one hit with two strike outs and two walks in six innings. Kieran Gibson took the loss surrendering two hits and one unearned run over the final inning.
  • Jason Treffiletti earned the win for Cobleskill throwing a scoreless eighth inning with a walk.
 
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Each team scored one run each in the opening inning of the nightcap with Canton adding another run in the second. Barone singled home Shoemaker in the first and Shoemaker scored Frank Nieto on a fielder's choice in the second.
  • Canton extended their lead to 5-1 with a three-run fourth inning. Allen doubled home Shoemaker and scored on a Ty Reed single before Alphonse Fuca brought home Reed on a base hit.
  • The Roos tacked on another run on a Shoemaker RBI single in the fifth scoring Nieto.
  • Cobleskill got one back in the fifth inning and added a pair of runs in their final at-bats. The Tigers brought the tying run to the plate but Gavin Neuland came on to get a fly out and strike out to end the game and pick up the save.
  • Kayden Guerin earned his team-leading third win of the season allowing three earned runs with four strike outs and six walks in 6.1 innings.
  • Wyatt Palmer took the loss for Cobleskill giving up five runs with three strike outs and two walks in four innings.
  • Shoemaker led the Canton bats going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Allen and Fuca had two hits and an RBI each.
  • Zach Ducorsky paced Cobleskill with two hits.
     
WHAT'S NEXT?
Sunday's baseball doubleheader against Plattsburgh State has been canceled due to expected rain all weekend. The Roos are scheduled to close out their regular season on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at St. Lawrence.
