Roos Honor Alvarez, Finnish Mustangs in Regular Season Finale

Potsdam, NY – Senior Sirena Alvarez has had many busy nights this season as the primary goaltender for the SUNY Canton women's hockey team.  The team's regular season finale was not one of them.  While Alvarez, who hails from Finland, only faced 12 shots on the night, she stopped them all earning her 13th shutout of her career placing her first all-time for the program.  The Roos earned a 2-0 victory over visiting SUNY Morrisville in a Northeast Women's Hockey League matchup.

The Roos honored Alvarez as the team's lone senior in a post-game ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Gracyn Emmerton kicked off the scoring for the Roos at 3:21 of the first period, racing down the left-hand dasher and snapping a wrister past Mustangs goaltender Maggie Jones.  Junior Makayla Young assisted on the goal.
  • Junior Victoria McGarrity pushed the lead to 2-0 Roos, just 36 seconds into the third when she picked up a loose puck in front of the net and buried it past Jones.  Emmerton earned her second point of the afternoon with the assist.
  • In the waning moments of the third period, a Morrisville cross-crease feed led to a dangerous scoring opportunity but Alvarez pushed hard of the near post, across the crease and preserved the shutout.

  • SUNY Canton also won the faceoff battle 32-25.
