Alvarez Stops 59, Roos Drop 4-1 Decision to #3 Plattsburgh

Roos Clinch 4 Seed in NEWHL Playoffs

Plattsburgh, NY – Sirena Alvarez made 59 saves for the Roos but the SUNY Canton women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to #3 Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon.

With Potsdam's 5-0 loss at Cortland on Saturday the Roos have clinched the four seed in the upcoming Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) playoffs. The Roos will travel to face top seed and No. 3 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State on Saturday, February 25th.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Plattsburgh opened the scoring at 16:24 of the first period when Mae Olshansky grabbed a rebound in the crease and backhanded a shot over a sprawling Alvarez.
  • Sierra Benjamin added a power play goal for the Cardinals 4:26 of the second.
  • Freshman Danika Lalonde scored a beautiful power play goal at 15:14 of second period to get the Roos back within one and make the score 2-1.  Lalonde took a pass from freshman Mathilde Couture and snapped a rising shot from the low circle between the pipe and goaltender name here's left shoulder.  Iida Laitinen earned a secondary assist on the goal.
  • The Cardinals picked up two additional goals by Nicole Unsworth and Sara Krauseneck  to close out the victory 4-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Roos finished the day 1/2 on the power play and 4/5 on the penalty kill
  • Plattsburgh dominated the faceoff dot 38-15.
  • SUNY Canton blocked 17 shots with Couture, Asha Hanson and Hannah Clement leading the way with three each.
  • Alvarez's 59 saves were the most for the Roos since Brooke Susac made 65 saves against Plattsburgh on November 16, 2019.
  • Ashley Davis and Chloe Beaubien combined to make 16 saves.
