Culkin Nets Season-High 20 Points as Wildcats Advance to NAC Championship

Roos Finish Above .500 for First Time in 9 Seasons

Marcy, NY – Joie Culkin netted a season-high 20 points but No. 1 seed SUNY Poly used a dominating second quarter to earn an 84-44 win v. the No. 3 seed SUNY Canton women's basketball in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinal playoff game on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats will host Husson University for the NAC championship next weekend, while this concludes the Roos successful season as they finish above .500 (13-12 overall) for the first time in nine seasons (2012-13).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SUNY Poly built an early eight point lead in the first quarter but Jayda Pina and Samantha Dayter scored back-to-back buckets inside to get Canton within four. The Wildcats led 16-10 after the opening quarter.
  • The hosts stormed out of the second quarter on a 15-0 run holding Canton scoreless the first four plus minutes of the period to take a 21 points lead at 31-10. Overall Poly went on a 32-2 run before a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer from Culkin. Poly led 48-15 at intermission.
  • Play was much more even in the second half with the Wildcats outscoring the Roos 36-29 to secure the convincing win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Culkin was impressive for the Roos posting 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting including a 6-for-12 mark from behind the arc. She scored her 20 points in just 21 minutes of action and added six rebounds. Dayter chipped in eight points and five assists. Antanasia Chambers added five points and four assists.
  • Molly Burdick paced Poly with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Lyrik Jackson (19) and Kierra Connor (14) scored in double figures. Burdick and Lauren Denny combined for 11 assists.
  • The hosts outrebounded the Roos 50-33 and held edges in points in the paint (42-8) and fast break points (16-2).
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
This concludes the Roos 2021-22 season in which they earned just the second NCAA playoff win for the women's basketball program since the Roos became full-time D-III members.
