Laitinen, Lalonde Lead Roos to NEWHL Win Over Potsdam

Canton, NY – Junior Iida Laitinen and freshman Danika Lalonde each recorded a goal and an assist and senior goaltender Sirena Alvarez made 24 saves as SUNY Canton beat SUNY Potsdam 4-1 in a Northeast Women's Hockey League contest on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Freshman Sydney Valiquette opened the scoring at 14:21 of the first period, taking a pass from Laitinen and blasting it from the point past Bears goaltender Magalie Parent.
  • Freshman Jayme McIlveen put the Roos up by two at 13:31 of the second period, getting in behind the Potsdam defense and making a nifty move to beat Parent on the backhand.  Lalonde earned the assist on the goal.
  • Play opened up in the third period with a number of scoring opportunities for both teams.  SUNY Canton went up 3-0 when Laitinen split two defenders and backhanded a shot in the top corner at 1:33 of the period.  Potsdam responded at 4:39 of the period when Rebecca Cain was finally able to solve Alvarez.
  • Lalonde scored a power play insurance goal at 7:42 of the third and was assisted by Junior Desiree Snook and freshman Jane Pancoe.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Alvarez was solid all night stopping 24 shots.  Parent had 30 saves for the Bears.
  • The Roos were 1/5 on the power play and 5/5 on the penalty kill. 
  • Faceoffs were even with each team winning 30. 
  • SUNY Canton blocked 14 shots and Potsdam blocked five.
