Lalonde Scores Twice as Roos Down Bears, 4-3

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Danika Lalonde scored a pair of goals to get the Roos out to a two-goal lead as they earned a 4-3 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win at SUNY Potsdam on Friday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 4, SUNY Potsdam 3
  • Location: Maxcy Ice Arena – Potsdam, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (5-1-1, 2-1-0 NEWHL) | SUNY Potsdam (2-3-0, 2-3-0 NEWHL)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos got on the board first at 18:30 of the opening period skating 4-on-4. Lalonde skated past a Potsdam defender and wristed a shot top shelf near post over the glove of Ellie Zurfluh. Sydney Valiquette forced the neutral zone turnover and picked up an assist on the play.
  • Shots on goal were even at five apiece as were face offs (10-10) with both teams going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Canton led 1-0 at first intermission.
  • Canton doubled its lead at 12:29 of the middle period on Lalonde's second tally of the night. Makayla Young's shot from the right point was initially saved by Zurfluh and the Potsdam netminder also turned aside a rebound shot by Scarlet Ditoro at the near post. Lalonde collected the puck behind the net and scored on a quick wrap around beating a sprawled-out Zurfluh.
  • The Bears got on the scoreboard at 17:30 cutting the deficit in half. Rachelle Cain took a shot from the right point that was redirected out in front past a screened Sirena Alvarez. Megan Teachout and Alessia Marandola were credited with assists on the play.
  • Canton dominated shots 18-9 in the second period, while the Bears controlled face offs 17-8. The Roos took a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
  • The Roos added an insurance goal at 5:49 of the third. Hannah Clement ripped a shot into the top left corner as Asha Hanson and Karena Barrett picked up assists on the play.
  • Kaylee Merrill got the Bears back within one at the 10:58 mark firing a shot high past a screened Alvarez. Taylor Swamp was credited with a helper on the play.
  • Jayme McIlveen used great individual effort to force a turnover in the Bears defensive zone as she lifted a backhander top shelf for the 4-2 advantage at the 14:29 mark.
  • That goal proved to be crucial as Potsdam pulled the goalie with 3:26 left and scored with the extra attacker with 1:25 remaining off the stick of Merrill.
