Alvarez Sets Single-Season Shutout Program Record

Buffalo, NY – Victoria McGarrity scored her first collegiate goal, Sirena Alvarez recorded a 26 save shutout, and six different Roos found the back of the net in a 6-0 win for the SUNY Canton women's hockey team against Buffalo State in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) game on Friday.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 6, Buffalo State 0
  • Location: Ice Arena – Buffalo, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (9-2-1, 3-2-1 NEWHL) | Buffalo State (1-12-1, 0-7-0 NEWHL)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos opened the scoring at 8:34 of the opening period when Victoria McGarrity scored her first collegiate goal. Kelly Leathem worked the puck around the far boards to Sandrene Garofalo at the left point. Her initial shot was saved, but McGarrity put home the rebound out in front.
  • The Roos outshot the Bengals 20-11 in the first period and led 1-0 after one.
  • Canton blew the game open with three goals in a five minute span of the middle period. Just 1:05 into the period Meaghan Best made a great individual effort skating from the near boards across the slot and backhanding a shot past the blocker of Bengal goaltender Jessica Auge.
  • Sarah Kosnaskie made it 3-0 less than two minutes later on the power play. Verity Lewis moved the puck up the right side to Halle McKinnon. She left the puck back to Kosnaskie at the right point who skated in and ripped a slapshot from the top of the right circle making the water bottle pop.
  • The Roos added their third goal of the second period at 5:56. Kosnaskie played the puck cross ice at the defensive blue line to Leathem. She fed the puck around the boards as it ricocheted right out in front to Iida Laitinen who buried her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
  • Canton made it 5-0 at the 4:44 mark of the third period. McGarrity used a strong forecheck to force a turnover in the Buffalo State defensive zone and won the puck to Desiree Snook. She beat Auge with a shot high off her glove and in.
  • The Roos concluded the scoring with just under two minutes left in the third. Scarlet Ditoro took a shot from the point and Maggie Convery scored off a rebound.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
