Gibson’s Strong Pitching Leads Baseball to Split v. Wildcats on Senior Day

Canton, NY – Kieran Gibson threw a complete game shutout to lead the SUNY Canton baseball team to a split of two North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games v. Cazenovia College on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day.

The Roos won the opener 1-0 behind Gibson's pitching performance and the Wildcats took the nightcap, 11-6.

SUNY Canton honored its graduating student-athlete prior to their opening game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE  
  • The Roos got on the board first in the second inning with one run, which proved to be the difference. Seth Gilbert walked with one out and with two down in the inning stole second to get into scoring position. That proved crucial as Dylan Allen placed a single through the right side to bring home Gilbert.
  • That was all Gibson needed on the mound as he threw a complete game shutout allowing just five hits and striking out three.
  • Dawson Eckrich took the loss for Cazenovia giving up one earned run with one strike out in 3.1 innings.
  • Allen, Kevin Kapfer and Zach Miner all had hits for the Roos.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Cazenovia jumped out to a quick lead in the nightcap with seven runs in the first and one in the second and added one in the fifth inning.
  • The Roos got on the board with one run in the fifth and four in the sixth and added one more in the seventh. Noah Reyes brought home Gilbert on a sacrifice fly to right in the fifth.
  • In the sixth, Gilbert singled down the left field line to plate Ty Reed. Mackenzie Mather reached on a fielder's choice bringing across Don Louis Rodriguez and Reyes ripped a 2 RBI double down the left field line scoring Gilbert and Mather.
  • Chris McVannan completed the Canton scoring in the seventh when he placed an RBI single through the right side to score Reed.
  • The Wildcats added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh which resulted in the 11-6 final.
  • Kamm Cassidy picked up the win for the Wildcats tossing 5.2 innings surrendering three earned runs with three strike outs and four walks.
  • Luis Torres-Rivera took the loss giving up seven earned runs in 0.2 innings with a strike out and walk. Shane Tiernan threw 6.1 innings of relief surrendering four earned runs with five strike outs and two walks.
  • McVannan went 2-for-2 with 1 RBI, while Gilbert was 2-for-4 with two runs and drove in a run. Reyes was 1-for-2 with 3 RBI and Mather finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and RBI.
  • Parker Wing and Cassidy both had three hits and drove in two runs each for the Wildcats.
