Canton, NY – Meaghan Best tallied a pair of goals and
Verity Lewis recorded a pair of assists to lead the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to a 4-2 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win v. Morrisville State on Friday evening.
The victory is the first for the Roos v. the Mustangs in program history. With the win Canton remains perfect on the season at 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in NEWHL play, while the Mustangs drop to 2-2-0 and 1-1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team found the back of the net in the opening period as the Roos held an 11-6 shots on goal advantage.
- SUNY Canton got on the board first at 4:13 of the middle period. Verity Lewis' shot went wide off the end boards as the puck poked out in front to Best who buried the puck into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Danielle Goner was also credited with an assist on the play.
- The Roos doubled their lead at 11:34 of the second period. Karena Barrett picked off a failed Mustang clearance just inside the blue line. She wristed a shot inside the left post past the blocker of Morrisville goaltender Elizabeth Timby.
- SUNY Canton held a 21-11 shots on goal advantage, while Morrisville owned a 24-13 faceoffs advantage through 40 minutes of play.
- The hosts extended their lead to 3-0 at the 5:34 mark of the third period when Sarah Kosnaskie skated from left to right and fired a backhand shot from just inside the right circle finishing top shelf.
- Morrisville got on the board three minutes later with the skater advantage as Alana McDonald found the back of the net.
- Best regained the three goal advantage for Canton on her second goal of the night less than a minute later. Lewis found Best with the puck near mid ice as she skated through the offensive zone putting home a wrist shot from just below the right circle.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Best led all players with two goals, while Lewis recorded a game-best two assists to go with a game-high +3 on-ice rating.
- Canton controlled shots 28-17, while Morrisville had the upper hand in face offs (34-20).
- The Mustangs went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Roos were 0-for-3.
- Sirena Alvarez made 15 saves in the win, while Timby turned aside 24 shots in the loss.
