Deuel & Sanchez Score Second Half Goals to Carry Roos to 2-1 Road Win at Morrisville

Nunez Records a Pair of Assists

Morrisville, NY – Jacob Deuel and Ellis Sanchez scored second half goals five minutes apart to lift the SUNY Canton men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind win against host Morrisville State in non-league action on Wednesday.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 2, Morrisville State 1
  • Location: Drake Field – Morrisville, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (5-5-1) | Morrisville State (4-7-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mustangs got on the board first roughly midway through the opening half. The Morrisville defense fed a ball up to Mohamed Sy and he made a great individual effort slicing his way between a pair of Canton defenders in front of goal. Sy fired a quick, low shot into the left corner of goal to beat Canton keeper Tyler Petersen for the early lead.
  • Shots on goal were even at two apiece in the opening 45 minutes but Morrisville took a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard into intermission.
  • The Roos evened the score at one apiece in the 62nd minute. Jason Hernandez played a ball out of the back up the left sideline to Agustin Nunez. He settled the ball waiting for forwards to make their runs forward. Nunez delivered a ball to Deuel at the far post who redirected a head back across the face of goal and past Mustang keeper Caleb Lucero.
  • Less than five minutes later Canton was on the attack again. Martin Torales executed a nice give-and-go with Jason Hernandez as Torales fed a through ball to get Nunez in behind the defense. Nunez then found Sanchez on a beautiful centering pass as the senior captain buried his team-leading seventh goal of the season on a one-time shot past Lucero.
  • The second goal proved to be all the Roos would need as Tyler Petersen finished with four second half saves to preserve the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Sanchez's goal is his seventh of the season and 12th of his career. Deuel's score is his first of the season and the second of his career.
  • Sy's tally for Morrisville was his fourth of the season.
