HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pilgrims got on the board first at 6:24 of the first period when Tara Turcotte picked off a pass in the Roos defensive zone and beat Canton goaltender Brooke Susac high over the glove side.
  • The Roos evened the score four minutes later when Brittany Miner won a battle for the puck at the boards behind Canton's goal. Ashley Gillies picked the loose puck up and found Lily Cullen out in front. The defending Colonial Hockey Conference Rookie of the Week beat NEC goalie Cianna Weir over the blocker. The hosts held a 12-5 shots edge in the opening period as the teams skated to first intermission tied at one.
  • Canton took its first lead of the contest at 13:49 of the middle period with the skater advantage. Gillies played the puck from right to left to Micayla Macintyre at the point. Her shot was blocked by a Pilgrim defender but deflected directly to Kelly Leathem who went top shelf for the 2-1 lead. Canton held a 24-12 shots advantage and 2-1 lead after two periods.
  • With just over 90 seconds remaining the Roos turned the puck over in the neutral zone. Kathleen Zimmerman was taken down on a breakaway resulting in a penalty shot with 1:36 remaining. Kristen Dukette took the shot but Susac was strong making the save to keep the one goal advantage.
