Smith Scores Twice as Roos Advance to NAC Championship Weekend with 5-0 Win at Johnson

Johnson, VT – Kyle Smith scored a pair of goals as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team earned a 5-0 road win v. NVU-Johnson in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Quarterfinals on Saturday.

With the win the Roos improve to 8-9-2 on the season and advance to the NAC Semifinals where they will take on top seed and tournament host Maine Maritime Academy. The Roos earned a 3-1 win v. the Mariners on September 22nd and are the only team to beat MMA in conference play.

SUNY Canton scored three times in less than an 11-minute span in the opening half. Austin Brault got the scoring started in the 31st minute off a pass from Evran Akman. Smith doubled the Canton lead eight minutes later off the setup from Kevin Velasquez. Four minutes before halftime Brett Anderson found Josh Geller to make it 3-0. The Roos held a 6-1 shots on goal advantage in the opening half.

Smith added his second goal of the game and ninth of the season in the 55th minute off a pass from Velasquez. Edward Malinoski netted his team-leading 11th goal of the season 14 minutes later for the 5-0 final.

Mouhammed Thiam made two saves in the shutout, while Gerrit Lane made six stops for the Badgers (10-7-0).
