Canton, NY – Nick Magliano scored for the SUNY Canton men's soccer team but a goal and assist from Ritchie Hetherington including the game-winner with .02 seconds remaining lifted visiting SUNY Potsdam to a 2-1 win on Tuesday evening.
Neither of the teams could find the back of the net in the opening half as the visiting Bears held a slim 2-0 shots on goal advantage.
The Bears (3-0-0) broke through in the 54th minute when Ritchie Hetherington beat a defender down the right sideline and played a ball into the box where Jorge Ferrer redirected a header into the left corner past a diving
Mouhammed Thiam.
The Roos (0-2-1) knotted the game in the 80th minute when
Kyle Smith took a corner from the right side and after the ball bounced off a defender loose in the box
Nick Magliano was able to find the back of the net.
SUNY Canton had a chance to take the lead off a set piece with 44 seconds remaining but
Kyle Smith's attempt went high. The Bears countered and after a failed clearance Hetherington sailed a perfect strike from way out into the upper left corner with just .02 seconds remaining for the win.
Thiam made seven saves for the Roos, while Mitchell earned his third win of the season for the Bears.
The men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when it squares off with the host Mountaineers in the Southern Vermont College Tournament. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
