Hyland Breaks up No-Hitter, Thornhill Posts Two Hits in Doubleheader v. Saints

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton softball team dropped a doubleheader in rainy conditions at St. Lawrence University by scores of 2-0 and 11-2 on Tuesday. The Saints end their season 22-11, while the Roos improve to 19-13.

Game 1 – Box Score
Hannah Sears tossed a one-hitter in the opener in her final career game for the Saints. Senior Jordan Podkladek also had a terrific outing for the Roos giving up just one earned run over six innings. The Saints got on the board in the third inning on a Caitlin Syphurs RBI double down the left field line. St. Lawrence added an insurance run in the fifth on an Alexandra Barter RBI base hit to right.

Sears carried a no-hitter with nine strike outs and no walks into the seventh but Courtney Hyland broke it up with one swing as she doubled down the left field line bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. However, Sears induced a ground out and pop out to earn the shutout win.

Game 2 – Box Score
St. Lawrence took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in Game 2 but the Roos scored a pair of runs in the top half of the second as Brittany Staltare reached on an error scoring Rachel Thornhill and Cassidy Yetter drove in Valerie Clark on an infield single.

Allie Courtwright and Madison Mitchell shut the door for the Saints tossing three scoreless innings the rest of the way while the SLU bats scored at least two runs each over the final three frames for the 11-2 victory.

Courtwright earned the win giving up two unearned runs in four innings of work, while Kelsey White took the loss giving up six earned over four innings.

The softball team will host the inaugural American College Athletic Association Championships on Saturday and Sunday. The Roos, who earned the three seed, will face two seed University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the opening game of the tournament.
