Troiano Scores Twice in Semifinal Loss v. Morrisville

CHS BOX SCORE

Beverly, MA – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team outshot Morrisville State 43-29 as Margret Troiano scored a pair of goals but the Mustangs earned a 4-2 win in the semifinal of the Colonial Hockey Playoffs on Saturday at Raymond Bourque Ice Arena.

The Roos (14-11-2) got on the board first at 15:19 of the opening period when Troiano lit the lamp for the sixth time of the season off passes from Rhea Coad and Tess Adams. Coad skated behind the net and hit Troiano out in front who slipped the puck through the five-hole of Morrisville goaltender Renee Schmaltz. SUNY Canton outshot Morrisville 17-12 as they used a strong finish to the opening period to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Morrisville (19-6-1) knotted the game at one just 57 seconds into the middle period when Vanessa Klimpke picked up the puck in the neutral zone and roofed her second of the season over the blocker of Brooke Susac.

The Mustangs added a second score at 13:16 of the period when Kaitlyn Schlake rifled a shot toward net from the right side. Susac appeared to make the stop but the puck hit off her pads and flew high into the air just inside the left post before she could recover. Canton continued to hold a 32-22 shots advantage but the Mustangs took the 2-1 lead into second intermission.

The Roos got within one with 4:06 remaining in the third when Troiano jammed the puck home in front. Coad and Sydney Kinder earned helpers on the play.

SUNY Canton called timeout with 1:27 left and an offensive zone faceoff as they pulled Susac for the extra skater. However, Schlake slotted her second of the game, an empty-netter with 8.4 seconds left for the 4-2 final.

Susac made 25 saves for the Roos, while Schmaltz turned aside 41 shots for the Mustangs. This concludes the Roos season, while the Mustangs advance to Sunday's CHC Championship v. Endicott.
