CHS BOX SCORE
Providence, RI – Lora Ardoin and
Sydney Jordan scored third period goals and Jordan netted the game-tying goal with just 1:24 remaining to help the SUNY Canton women's hockey team earn a 2-2 overtime tie against Johnson & Wales University on Thursday at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence.
The host Wildcats (7-9-1) controlled play in the opening period outshooting Canton, 12-5. After the Roos (6-8-1) killed off a pair of penalties Johnson & Wales got on the board first at 17:45 of the period, scoring shorthanded. Kathy Ensor picked off a pass in her defensive zone and skated in on the breakaway.
Brooke Susac made the initial save but Ensor jammed home the rebound. The Roos appeared to answer back moments later when the puck looked to be in the back of the net but the play was whistled dead.
Canton came out of intermission firing on all cylinders as they outshot JWU 15-4 over the middle 20 minutes but the Wildcats clung to a one goal lead after two.
The third period was once again dominated by Canton as they doubled up the Wildcats, 10-5, in shots. At the 7:01 mark
Tessa Dobson cycled the puck from the far boards out to Ardoin at the point. She ripped a slap shot top shelf just under the bar and over the glove side of Julia Aberg to knot the game at one.
Julia Martinsson responded just more than three minutes later off a setup from Ensor and Alexis Harle to regain the one goal advantage for JWU.
With time winding down in the game the Wildcats were whistled for back-to-back penalties 29 seconds apart giving the Roos 91 seconds of a 5-on-3 skater advantage. Following the second penalty Head Coach
Dave LaBaff called timeout to set up the two-skater edge. Forty-two seconds later it paid off as
Margret Troiano hit Jordan with a pass from left to right at the point and she buried her second goal of the season off the left post and in.
Canton continued to press and control shots late including a 3-0 advantage in the overtime period but the teams settled for a 2-2 tie.
Susac made 20 saves for the Roos, while Aberg turned aside 31 shots for Johnson & Wales. The Roos were 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Canton penalty kill went a perfect 4-for-4.
