Rigsby’s Big Night Leads Hawks Past Roos in CHC Quarterfinals

CHS BOX SCORE

Canton, NY – The Becker College women's ice hockey team used 43 saves from Madison Rigsby to earn a 1-0 upset against host SUNY Canton in the quarterfinal round of the Colonial Hockey Conference playoffs on Saturday night at the Roos House.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the opening period. The Roos (7-18-1) held a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal after 20 minutes of play as the teams headed to first intermission tied at 0.

SUNY Canton continued to dominate the shots on goal in the middle period 18-5 but were still unable to solve Rigsby.

The Roos continued to generate quality scoring chances in the third period. Six minutes in Anna Lagzdina (Ozolnieki, Latvia) had an initial shot saved but Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK) was in the right spot at the right post. Her shot initially appeared like it may have gone in but bounced off Rigsby and off the inside of the right post.

Minutes later SUNY Canton had another golden chance as Pele streaked down the left side of the ice with the puck and found a cutting Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) but Rigsby made a tremendous save just inside the right post sliding from her right to left.

With 8:09 remaining the Roos were whistled for a five minute major giving Becker (6-19-0) an extended five minute power play. SUNY Canton did a tremendous job killing off a majority of the penalty but with just 26 ticks left in the skater advantage when Brittany Aiello slotted her seventh of the season off passes from Elysabeth Jefferies and Michaela Martin.

SUNY Canton continued to press looking for the equalizer and pulled the goalie with one minute remaining. Pele ripped a shot from the right side with 10 seconds remaining that went off the facemask of Rigsby but the Hawks were able to clear the puck and hang on for the upset.

Rigsby stopped 43 shots with at least 12 in each period and 18 in the second. Illie Berisha (Lake Ariel, PA) had a strong outing for the Roos turning aside 18 of the 19 shots she faced.

This closes out the 2015-16 season for SUNY Canton, while Becker advances to the CHC Semifinals. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on Facebook and "following" our TwitterInstagram and YouTube accounts.
