Canton, NY – Sophomore
Noelle Niemiec (Staten Island, NY) posted two goals and an assist as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team cruised past visiting SUNY Potsdam, 6-1, on Tuesday evening in the Roos House.
Tessa Dobson (Moose Factory, ON) added a goal and assist and
Brooke Susac (Bowmanville, ON) stopped 26 of the 27 shots she faced as the Roos improved to 5-2-0 on the season. With the loss the Bears drop to 5-3-0.
The Roos wasted no time getting on the board just 50 seconds in. With the puck deep along the far boards the puck deflected out to Niemiec at the point who one-timed a shot top shelf over the glove of Potsdam goaltender Nicole Whitesell.
SUNY Canton doubled its lead with just 19 seconds remaining in the opening period as Dobson collected the puck behind the net and fed a quick pass to
Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) out in front as she put home her third goal of the year. The Roos held a 9-3 shots advantage taking a 2-0 lead into first intermission.
The Roos carried over their first period momentum to the second as just 15 seconds into the middle period an
Alyssa Hein (Regina, SK) shot deflected off a defender to
Mariah McCue (Belleville, ON) at the point and Dobson stood out in front redirecting home McCue's shot for the 3-0 lead. Just less than three minutes later
Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) deflected a Niemiec shot from the point to tally her third goal of the season.
Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK) was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Bears got one back 11:05 into the second when Ann-Rose Bertin netted her fifth goal of the season off passes from Jenna Patterson and Brenna Wilson. With 1:58 remaining, Niemiec slotted her second goal of the game as her initial shot was saved but she put the rebound past Whitesell for the 5-1 lead. The Roos held a 20-16 shots advantage after two but 12 second period saves from Susac kept the Roos up 5-1 after 40 minutes.
SUNY Canton extended its lead to five at 11:56 of the third period on a great individual play by
Sydney Jordan (Prince George, BC) who beat multiple defenders and dangled the goalie lifting a shot high over the glove for the 6-1 final.
Susac stopped 26 of the 27 shots she faced for her fifth win of the season. Whitesell made 15 saves allowing five goals over the first two periods, while Kayla McCabe turned aside eight shots surrendering one score over the final 20 minutes.
The Roos went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the SUNY Canton penalty kill unit went 6-for-6 on the night.
