Canton, NY – John Mancini (Scotia, NY) threw one inning in relief to earn the win and
Keenan Shannon (Ballston Spa, NY) posted three hits as the SUNY Canton baseball team defeated Alfred State College 4-3 on Senior Day.
The Roos honored their four seniors
Dom Deliberti (Staten Island, NY),
Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, FL), Mancini and Shannon prior to today's contest. The seniors shined brightly on Senior Day, all making their impact in the contest.
Delberti got the start scattering eight hits and three earned runs over seven innings striking out a pair of batters as he got the no-decision. Mancini did not surrender a hit striking out a batter in one inning of relief to earn the win. Shannon had a big day at the plate going 3-for-4 scoring once and Jones posted one hit and scored twice including the game-winning run.
Alfred State (11-22) took the early lead on an RBI ground out in the top of the second. SUNY Canton bounced right back as
Travis Schindler's (West Islip, NY) ground out to short scored Jones. The Roos (10-26) took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single to left field from
Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) in the third.
SUNY Canton President, Dr. Zvi Szafran, threw out
the first pitch prior to today's contest.The Pioneers knotted the game once again on a base hit in the fourth and took the lead with a double to left in the sixth. In an entertaining game, SUNY Canton tied the game at 3-3 on an infield single by
Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) and Shannon scored on the ensuing error.
SUNY Canton would take the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth as Jones reached on a lead-off single to right field. Shannon followed suit with a hit moving the lead run to third. Welch executed a terrific bunt legging out the single and giving the Roos the 4-3 lead.
Robbie Osterer (Ottawa, ON) threw one inning of scoreless ball to earn the save. With one out and the tying run on first
Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) made a terrific play in center field running down a ball in right center that could have saved a run. Welch gunned down the Alfred State runner at first base to end the game.
