Baseball Comeback Falls Short at Clarkson

Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team nearly overcame a two run but host Clarkson University used a late burst to secure a 6-2 victory on Wednesday.

The Golden Knights (16-5) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of RBI singles in the first inning. Clarkson added one run on another base hit through the right side of the infield in the third.

SUNY Canton trimmed the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) drew a leadoff walk and Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) followed with another free pass. Jesse Barton (Belle Glade, NY) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring positon with one out.

Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, FL) singled to center to score Mike McGinn (Palmyra, NY) who came on to pinch-run for Roenbeck. Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) reached on an error in the ensuing at-bat to plate Welch but Jones was gunned down at third base on a throw from the center fielder. The inning would end in the next at-bat on a ground out.

Clarkson regained a three run lead with a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh and added an insurance run in the eight on a sacrifice fly. Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) and Welch led off the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with base hits but the Roos were unable to get another run across.

Travis Bigelow (Ottawa, ON) threw seven innings surrendering five earned runs finishing with two walks and four strike outs. Dom Deliberti (Staten Island, NY) gave up one run in one inning of relief action.
