Box ScoreBellerose, NY – Host St. Joseph's College Brooklyn used two runs in the bottom of the ninth including a walk-off to hand the SUNY Canton baseball team a 5-4 loss on Sunday.
The Roos opened the game with two runs in the top of the first.
Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) started the game with a single down the left field line and stole second.
Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Cruz over to third with one down. He would then score on a
Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY) ground out.
Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) doubled to center with two down and
Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) followed with a single to right center as SUNY Canton (4-12) led 2-0 early.
The Bears responded with three runs in the bottom of the third in large part due to a pair of errors by SUNY Canton. All three runs that came across in the frame were unearned.
SUNY Canton immediately got one back in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Douglas opened the inning getting on base after being hit by a pitch. He then stole second and scored after a
Derrick Machado (Brooklyn, NY) single and a fielding error by the outfielder.
Douglas continued his strong outing, reaching base to start the inning for a third time in the top of the eighth as he doubled down the left field line.
Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) moved the lead run to third on a sacrifice and
Greg Dobies (Schenectady, NY) singled down the left field line to give the Roos a 4-3 lead.
SUNY Canton took the one run lead into the bottom of the ninth but St. Joseph's rallied. After a leadoff walk the Bears moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. After a single the Bears tied the game up on a balk. The following batter walked and with one down in the inning a slow roller in the infield brought the game-winning run across the plate. The Roos fired to the plate but the tag was just late as St. Joseph's earned the win.
Zach Lawrence (West Palm Beach, FL) scattered five hits over five innings without surrendering a single earned run. He struck out two and walked one.
Robbie Osterer (Ottawa, ON) threw three innings of relief on the mound, while
Keenan Shannon (Ballston Spa, NY) took the loss for the Roos.
