Utica, NY – Tess Adams (Calgary, AB) and
Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK) combined for four points on a goal and three assists as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team closed out its weekend doubleheader with a 6-3 loss to host Utica College.
The Pioneers (2-0-0) were strong on the power play once again going 3-for-7, while SUNY Canton (0-2-0) was 1-for-5 with the extra skater.
Utica opened the scoring 4:12 into the first as Emily Coope put home a rebound on the power play for her first goal of the season. Lauren Patterson made it 2-0 Pioneers at 16:38 of the first period on her first collegiate goal. In a high scoring first 20 minutes Gabrielle Schnepp scored her third goal in two games as Utica capitalized on the power play once again.
SUNY Canton was quick to respond as
Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) won the ensuing faceoff for the Roos. Ardoin got the puck back off passes from Adams and Pele to get SUNY Canton back within two with just 11 ticks left in the opening period.
Utica regained a three goal advantage at 3:05 of the second when Janessa Hassbeek rifled a shot in from the point. The Roos continued to battle and that paid off at 11:53 when Adams roofed a perfect shot off the crossbar and in for her first collegiate goal. Pele earned a helper on the play.
The Pioneers regained the momentum with a pair of goals from Morgan Reed and Haasbeek 1:21 apart to open up a 6-2 lead after two periods.
Noelle Niemiec (Staten Island, NY) caged her first collegiate goal on the power play with 4:19 remaining. She picked up the loose puck in front of goal and used a screen to beat Utica goaltender Amanda Lupo.
Hannah Brady (Jeannette, PA) assisted on the tally.
Illie Berisha (Lake Ariel, PA) finished with 19 saves, while Lupo turned aside 21 shots on the way to her first career win.
The Roos return to the ice on Friday night when it visits Daniel Webster College at 8 p.m. to open its inaugural conference play in the Colonial Hockey Conference
