Malinoski Scores Two First Half Goals v. Elmira

Elmira, NY – Freshman Edward Malinoski, Jr (Evans Mills, NY) scored two first half goals to lead the SUNY Canton men's soccer team to a 2-0 halftime lead, but host Elmira College stormed back with three second half goals en route to a 3-2 victory on Wednesday.

Malinoski helped the Roos (4-10-0) secure the momentum early on when he was the recipient of a Tyler Gallagher (Potsdam, NY) pass in the fourth minute. Malinoski took the delivery from the right corner going 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper and buried his third marker of the season at 3:44 to put SUNY Canton on top 1-0.

The freshman from Indian River High School would strike again exactly 12 minutes later on his team-leading fourth goal of the season after a failed clearance from Elmira. Despite the Soaring Eagles holding a 10-3 shots advantage both teams placed two shots on goal, as the Roos made both of theirs count, to lead 2-0 at intermission.

The Soaring Eagles (5-4-3) looked to jump back into the game out of break and they did just that as John Broyles fed Tony Barraco for a score just 11 seconds into the second half.

The Roos nearly got one back minutes later as a Gallagher shot went just wide of the left post from the top of the 18.

With 15:12 remaining the Roos were whistled for a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for Elmira to tie the game. The Soaring Eagles' Michael Bryant, who entered the game at fourth in the NCAA in goals per game, stepped up and calmly put home his 13th goal of the season.

Bryant struck again just less than five minutes later scoring on a header off a pass from Barraco to give Elmira its first lead of the game en route to the 3-2 comeback victory.

Austin Lamay (Malone, NY) made five saves over 79:45, while Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) turned aside one shot over the final 10:15. Kevin Huggins made one save for the Soaring Eagles.

The men's soccer team will try to snap its three game skid when it visits Castleton State College at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on Facebook and "following" our TwitterInstagram and YouTube accounts.
