Canton, NY – Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) broke out for two goals in just over a two-minute span, but three unanswered goals gave Houghton College a 3-2 victory against the men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.
Early on in the 26th minute
Jose Menendez (Maracay, Venezuela) played a ball in to Tyler Gallagher (Potsdam, NY) who flicked it on to Escalante for his first goal of the season to get the hosts on the board. Two minutes and 16 seconds later Escalante struck again. This time
Randy Mayer (Akron, NY) played a wonderful chip pass to Escalante who put it home past Houghton goalkeeper Jacob Dunnett to make it 2-0 Roos at the 27:38 mark.
The Highlanders responded with two goals of their own in a four minute span. Tyler Inch got the Houghton scoring started in the 34th minute with a long strike from 24 yards out beating
Austin Lamay (Malone, NY) into the left side of the net. Jared Toth added a second goal for the visitors as the teams played to a 2-2 draw at intermission.
Toth found the back of the net for the second time at the 60:14 mark finding the back of the net in a bunch of traffic in what proved to be the game-winner.
Lamay stopped two shots in net for SUNY Canton, while Dunnett turned aside four Roo shots for the Highlanders. Escalante paced the hosts with three shots on target, while Gallagher, Menendez and
Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) each challenged Dunnett once.
