Box Score
Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team got strong play from its special team units but was unable to overcome a hat trick from the Bears Amanda Lucky falling, 5-2, to visiting SUNY Potsdam on Sunday afternoon.
Lucky got the scoring started 14:40 into the first on her ninth of the season off passes from Jessica Silveira and Jordan Ott. Despite a 9-8 shots advantage for the Roos, Potsdam led 1-0 after one.
SUNY Canton (8-14-3) knotted the game at one on the power play just 56 seconds into the second frame when
Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) centered a pass from behind Potsdam's net that went off the skates of a Bear defender and past Alexane Rodrigue.
Potsdam (12-8-3) answered a mere 13 seconds later when Silveira got on the board as Lucky and Ott set up the play. The Roos then committed four straight penalties and six out of seven. The penalty kill unit was strong killing off the first five, but on the sixth attempt Ott made them pay as she lit the lamp with 32 seconds remaining in the second. Lucky and Izzy Fayerman earned helpers on the play.
Lucky netted her second tally of the game 51 seconds into the final period to make it 4-1 Potsdam. Katie Marsman and Brittany Lucky were awarded assists on the score. At the 7:31 mark
Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) trimmed the deficit to two forcing a turnover at the blue line. She stole the puck skating into the offensive zone and beating Rodrigue for the short-handed marker making it 4-2.
Less than two minutes later Lucky beat Roo goaltender
Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) for the third time completing the hat trick on an assist from Silveira resulting in the 5-2 final.
SUNY Canton's eight wins match its total from a season ago. However, this was the Roos first season against a complete NCAA schedule. With the win Potsdam ties its single season win mark with 12, which it set in 2012.
Dominique turned aside 34 Bear shots, while Rodrigue made 20 saves for Potsdam. This rounds out the 2013-14 season for SUNY Canton.
