Cree Knots Game Late But Knights Tack on Two in Closing Minutes

Box Score

Aston, PA – Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) netted her 10th goal of the season to tie the game late in the third period, but two scores in the closing minutes gave host Neumann University a 3-1 win Tuesday evening.

The hosts got on the board early as 4:59 into the opening period they were able to take advantage of a Roo infraction for tripping. Just over midway through the power play chance the Knights converted as Shanelle Doucette found Megan Russelo for her fifth goal of the season. The Knights led 1-0 after one.

Neumann (6-14-1) dominated the second period in shots but strong play from Roo goaltender Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) kept SUNY Canton in the game as it trailed by just one goal after 40 minutes of play.

Cree led the Roo attack all night and her plethora of shots finally paid off when she beat Knight net minder Julia Fair to knot the game at 1-1 at the 15:09 mark of the third. Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) and Dana Morrison (Wemindji, QUE) were credited with assists on the Cree score.

The host Knights wasted little time as just 17 seconds later Dru Austin beat Dominique to help Neumann regain the lead at 2-1. Grace Kleinbach and Russelo registered helpers on the play.

With 2:47 remaining in regulation Neumann was whistled for high sticking sending the Roo power play to the ice. After not finding the back of the net the first 80 seconds with the skater advantage, Head Coach Melissa Lomanto pulled Dominique sending another skater to the ice for a 6-on-4 advantage. With just 1:13 left on the clock Russelo netted her second tally of the game, this one coming short-handed with the empty net as the Knights held on for the 3-1 final.

Cree led the Roos (7-13-3) with seven shots on goal in the game. The Roos controlled the face off circle 37-23. Dominique turned aside 33 shots for SUNY Canton, while Fair made 15 stops for Neumann.

The women's hockey team is back in action Saturday when it visits SUNY Potsdam for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop. The Roos will then host the Bears on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Roos House in their season finale.
