Canton, NY – Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) found the back of the net twice as the SUNY Canton women's ice hockey team scored three consecutive goals to secure a 4-4 overtime tie with visiting University of New England on Saturday afternoon in the Roos House.
The visitors got on the board first 6:15 into the opening period when Shannon Smith fired a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Roo goaltender
Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, NY). The Nor'easters (2-5-1) took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as Kieffer stopped 14 shots in the opening period.
Emily Corrales made it 2-0 just 1:23 into the second as she picked up the puck in the corner and lifted a shot over the glove side of Kieffer. Just over four minutes later Troiano responded as she snuck the puck through the five hole of Sydney Helmbrecht to get SUNY Canton within 2-1.
Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) and
Bineh Garrow (Akwesasne, NY) were credited with assists on the play.
With just less than four minutes left in the second period New England made it 3-1 as Smith netted her second marker of the contest firing a shot from the right circle just inside the far post. The Roos continued to battle and it paid off with 1:15 left in the period with the skater advantage. Diabo ripped a shot from the point as
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) redirected the puck into the back of the net for her second goal in two games.
Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) was also credited with an assist on the play. UNE led 3-2 after two.
SUNY Canton (1-6-1) continued to use its momentum from late in the second period as just 44 seconds into the third frame Diabo was heavily involved in the offense once again. Ardoin won a faceoff back to Diabo at the blue line who rifled a slap shot through traffic in front of net as it found its way past Helmbrecht to tie it at 3-3.
The Roos continued to push and Troiano netted an unassisted goal, her second tally of the game 5:57 into the third to give SUNY Canton its first lead of the contest. Corrales scored the equalizer for the Nor'easters with just 2:52 left in the third period on a scramble out in front. Gabriella Moscato and Kierra Wright assisted the power play marker, as the teams would skate into overtime.
Kieffer was big in the extra session stopping all four shots she faced to secure the 4-4 tie for SUNY Canton. The sophomore net minder finished with 41 saves on the afternoon, while Helmbrecht turned aside 21 shots for UNE. Both teams scored once with the extra skater as the Roos went 1-for-3 and the Nor'easters went 1-for-4.
