Alfred, NY – Randy Mayer (Akron, NY) scored in the 22nd minute to give the Roos an early lead on the road but three unanswered goals from Alfred University gave the Saxons a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon.
Just 12:41 into the contest
Abdulai Jagana (Bronx, NY) was given back-to-back yellow cards resulting in the ensuing red card, as SUNY Canton would be forced to play the remainder of the contest a man down.
The Roos were initially able to overcome that adversity as they got on the board first at the 21:55 mark when
Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) dribbled into the box luring Alfred goalkeeper Chris Gutierrez out of net. Escalante played a quick cross to Mayer across the face of goal as the freshman finished into the open net.
The Saxons knotted the game at one in the 34th minute when Brendan Collins scored his first goal of the season off a rebound. The hosts added a crucial goal with just 44 seconds left in the opening half as Collins passed a ball into the box that found Miguel Reyes who volleyed it home for a 2-1 Alfred lead at intermission. The hosts held a 9-4 shots on goal edge in the opening 45 minutes but seven big saves from
Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) kept the Roos in the game.
Despite being a man down SUNY Canton continued to push in the second half mustering three shots on target. Escalante challenged Gutierrez twice in the first 19 minutes of the second half and again with 11 minutes to play but the Saxons were able to hold on for the 3-1 victory.
Anunziatta was a force in the contest all game making a career-high 12 stops. Meanwhile, Gutierrez made six saves for Alfred. Escalante tied a match-high with four shots on goal, while Collins challenged the keeper four times for the Saxons.
