Box Score
Canton, NY – Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season and
Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) picked up her team-best 10th assist but the women's hockey team fell, 4-1, to visiting Sacred Heart University on Saturday at the Roos House.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening period as SUNY Canton (6-11-2) freshman
Shayna Dominique (Mistinni, QUE) turned aside 16 shots to keep Sacred Heart off the board. The teams combined for 27 shots on target and were even 9-9 in the faceoff circle in the first.
After both teams took several penalties early in the second period it was the visitors who got on the board first. Catie Ladner fed the puck to Megan Ofner at the point who fired a shot toward net. Natasha Klinoff stood out in front and redirected the puck low past Dominique's stick side to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead after two.
The third period was loaded with scoring starting at the 4:00 minute mark when Heather Daley fed a breakout pass to Hanna Skelley who skated in on the breakaway. Her initial shot was saved by Dominique, but Skelley collected the rebound and put it in past Dominique's glove side for the 2-0 lead.
At the 14:20 mark Alanna Woodford skated into the offensive zone and sniped a shot top shelf to make it 3-0 in favor of the Pioneers. With 43 seconds remaining the Roos got on the board when Kistabish tallied her 11th goal of the season, this one coming shorthanded off passes from
Dana Morrison (Wemindji, QUE) and Cree. Kistabish rifled a shot beating Sacred Heart goaltender Alexius Schutt glove side.
The Pioneers (3-10-5) added a fourth goal just 20 seconds later with the skater advantage when Casey Stathopoulos tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season off passes from Alex Davis and Klinoff. Sacred Heart went 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Roos were 0-for-5. Dominique and Schutt both stopped 34 shots in the contest.
