Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team scored two straight goals to lift the Roos (5-10-2) to a 2-1 win against visiting Chatham University. With the loss the Cougars fall to 3-8-2.
Chatham got on the board first 12:25 into the first on a 5-on-3 as Katrina Hawkins netted her fourth goal in two games to put the visitors up early, 1-0. Erika Martin and Erika Bronk earned helpers on the play.
Four minutes later
Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) fed
Maddy Hetman (Troy, NY) who fired an initial shot on net. Megan Buchanan made the save but the rebound went right to Bernadette O'Connell (Buffalo, NY) who put it home to tie the game at 1-1 after one period. The assist was the first point for Hetman in a SUNY Canton uniform.
The Roos would score their second straight goal at the 10:05 mark of the second frame when
Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) played the puck to
Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) at the top of the left circle. Cree lasered a shot top shelf that deflected off a Cougar defender and just under the crossbar. The power play score was Cree's seventh tally of the season as SUNY Canton took a 2-1 lead into second intermission.
Both teams pushed in the final period but Roo net minder
Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) stopped all five shots she faced in the frame as SUNY Canton prevailed, 2-1. Dominique made 21 saves in 22 shots faced, while her counterpart Buchanan turned aside 21 shots.
Cree, Ardoin and O'Connell paced the Roos with five shots on goals apiece. SUNY Canton dominated in the faceoff circle outdueling the Cougars 33-20. Cree went 13-for-18 in the circle, while Ardoin won 18 of her 30 chances. Chatham went 1-for-8 on the power play, while the Roos were 1-for-6 with the skater advantage.
