Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision to visiting Chatham University Friday evening at the Roos House. With the win the Cougars improve to 3-7-2, while the Roos drop to 4-10-2.
The Roos only had one chance on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-for-4 on the power play as the SUNY Canton penalty kill held Chatham to just one shot with the extra skater.
The visitors got on the board first just 1:18 into the first period when Katrina Hawkins was in the right place at the right time as she picked up a loose puck just in front of the right faceoff circle and put it home for the early 1-0 lead. Brianna Rice earned an assist on the play. Just over midway through the frame the Roo penalty kill unit came up big killing off a 5-on-3. The Cougars added a second score with just 18 seconds left in the opening period when Erika Bronk fed a precise breakout pass to Morgan Becer who skated in on the breakaway. Becer beat Roo goaltender
Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) five-hole to make it 2-0 after one.
Hawkins netted her second goal of the game at the 8:16 mark of the second period off passes from Brittany Yoisten and Erika Martin. Just 52 seconds later Marie Soukup intercepted a pass and skated into the offensive zone sniping a shot into the upper left corner just under the crossbar. Hawkins finished off the hat trick at the 16:47 mark of the frame when she beat Roo net minder
Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, NY) low and left past the glove. Chatham led 5-0 after two periods.
Chatham would add a score 5:35 into the third from Casey Morfeld off a pass from Erika Martin for the 6-0 final. Dominique made nine saves over 31:03, while Kieffer turned aside 11 shots in the final 31:03. Megan Buchanan earned her first win of the season with 23 saves in the shutout.
Bernadette O'Connell (Buffalo, NY) led the Roos with seven shots on goal, while
Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) challenged Buchanan five times.
