Dominique Stops Career-High 43 Shots but Roos Fall on the Road

Box Score

Oswego, NY – Freshman Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) turned aside a season-best 43 shots but SUNY Canton fell, 6-1, Saturday afternoon to host Oswego State. The Lakers improve to 8-2-1, while the Roos fall to 4-5-2.

Oswego State was first to find the back of the net when Bailee Goodon collected a loose puck inside the right faceoff circle and beat Dominique glove side for the lead just 2:12 into the contest. At the 12:45 mark the Roos picked up a five-minute major penalty. Dominique saved the first seven shots she faced on the Laker power play but it was the eighth shot that snuck through as Kendall Appelbaum made it a two-goal game with just less than five minutes left in the first.

The Roos nearly escaped the first period with just a two-goal deficit but Oswego State's Bridget Hamlin lit the lamp with just 1.5 seconds left on the clock. Dominique made 17 first period saves as the Lakers took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

After neither team found the back of the net for most of the second stanza there was a flurry of scoring in the final minutes. At the 16:55 mark after Dominique made a great initial blocker save Goodon scored her second goal of the game when she fired a shot from a tough angle on the left side that trickled between Dominique's legs.

With 40 seconds remaining Mady Paul assisted Ashley Lyman who put the puck over the blocker side for the 5-0 lead. Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) got the Roos on the board 20 seconds later when she picked the puck up in the neutral zone and skated into the offensive third. As a defender was closing she just got a wrist shot off that beat Bridget Smith over her stick into the left side of net. The Lakers took the 5-1 lead into second intermission.

The hosts would add another score in the third period when Appelbaum tallied her second power play goal of the day for the 6-1 final. Dominique stopped 43 shots in the game including 18 in the opening period. Smith made 13 saves for the Lakers.
