Late Roo Surge Comes up Short at Franklin Pierce

Box Score

Winchendon, MA – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team got within two goals early in the third period but dropped a 5-2 decision to host Franklin Pierce University Friday evening at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The win improves the Ravens to 8-1-0, while the Roos fall to 4-6-2.

Franklin Pierce controlled play early using a pair of Karsyn Baker power play scores over a five-minute span. At 4:21 of the first period Baker received a pass across the slot and lit the lamp for the 1-0 lead. Colleen Doucette and Katie Flynn were credited with assists on the score. Baker was the recipient of some fortunate luck when she put a shot toward net at the 9:03 mark. The puck deflected off a defender's stick and over the shoulder of Roo net minder Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) to make it 2-0 in favor of the Ravens. They took that lead into intermission.

Baker continued her strong play as 6:02 into the second frame she took the puck down the right wing weaving into the slot and fired a shot just inside the far post to complete the natural hat trick. Franklin Pierce made it 4-0 five minutes later when Haylea Barbieri circled from left to right behind the net stopping in the right faceoff circle and firing a shot past Dominique.

The Roos remained resilient and got on the board at the 16:14 mark of the period when Bernadette O'Connell (Buffalo, NY) beat the goaltender for the fourth time this season. There was a rush down the right wing as O'Connell pulled up at the right circle and rifled a shot on goal. Raven goaltender Noelle White got a piece of the shot but it was not enough as the puck found its way into the goal. Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) earned a helper on the play. The Ravens took a 4-1 lead into second intermission.

SUNY Canton trimmed the deficit to two 8:46 into the third period when Tia Mitchell (Akwesasne, NY) netted her second goal of the season, this one coming with the skater advantage. Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, NY) and Caroline Mundy (Kittanning, PA) assisted the Mitchell marker. After an initial Hutcheson shot Mitchell was able to put home the rebound on a scramble in front of goal. Franklin Pierce added a late Marisa Ketterman tally with nine seconds remaining for the 5-2 final.

The Ravens held a large 49-10 advantage in the faceoff circle and 36-21 edge in shots. O'Connell led SUNY Canton with seven shots, while Olga Russell (Rome, NY) and Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) put three shots apiece on target. White made 19 saves for Franklin Pierce, while Dominique turned aside 31 shots for the Roos. SUNY Canton went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Ravens were 2-for-7 with the extra skater.
