Box Score (Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team wrapped up their season with a 64-60 loss to Vermont Technical College Sunday afternoon in Canton.
The Roos came out of the gates a bit sluggish and got down early and eventually trailed 27-17 with 8:40 left in the first half. But the Roos came to life and reeled off 11 straight points to surge ahead 28-27. Freshman
Karina Stanford (New York, N.Y.) started the run converting 1 of 2 free throws. That was followed by a 3-pointer from freshman
Tricia Boland (Hammond, N.Y.), a layup by Stanford, a three-point play from junior
Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.), and two free throws from freshman
Corrine Riegel (Bainbridge, N.Y.). The Roos, who closed the half on a 20-5 run, took a 37-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
SUNY Canton (6-16) maintained a lead between four and eight points for most of the second half before the Green Knights staged a late-game rally. Vermont Tech trimmed the lead down to a bucket at 58-56 with under five minutes left and then pulled ahead after two free throws and a layup from Ama Baker. The Green Knights then sealed the win going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of play.
Myers led the Roos with 19 points and 11 rebounds for her team-leading eighth double-double of the season. Riegel also reached double-digits with 15 points and four rebounds.
Boland finished with seven points. Freshman
Elissa St. Germain (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) had six points and three rebounds and junior
Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with five points, four assists and four steals.
Baker tossed in a game-high 28 points and snagged eight rebounds for the Green Knights (6-16). Kelly Vellek added 19 points and eight boards.
