(Presque Isle, Maine)- The SUNY Canton women's softball team captured the Sunrise Conference regular season title on Sunday as they rolled over the University of Maine at Presque Isle 9-1 and 13-2 in a doubleheader in Maine. The Roos took four games from the Owls this weekend and finished 9-3 in the conference .
They have secured the top seed in next weekend's conference tournament which will be held at Regis College in Weston, Mass.
SUNY Canton has not had a season the past two years as they have been rebuilding the program. Head Coach Diane Para has spearheaded those rebuilding efforts along with assistant coach
Pat Martin.
"We picked a good weekend to play our best softball," said Para. "We played extremely well on defense and had timely hits in all four games against a solid Presque Isle team. Tina pitched four outstanding games for us and everyone on our team contributed to these wins."
The Roos trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the fifth inning of game two, but
Carolina Olivares (Adelanto, Calif.) blasted a three-run homer in that inning to launch SUNY Canton to the win.
Vickie Lynch (Howard Beach, N.Y.) followed with a three-run homer of her own in the sixth inning.
Jenifer Shaw (Helendale, Calif.) added three doubles and a single for the Roos in game two.
Shelby McGraw (North Lawrence, N.Y.) and
Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) also doubled for SUNY Canton.
In the first game Lottie had a solo home run in the top of the first inning to get the Roos off to a good start. Shaw and
Colleen Rivers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each added three singles apiece.
Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) picked up two more wins on the mound Sunday as she scattered eight hits with one strikeout in the opener and then gave up eight singles with one more strikeout in the nightcap.
Danielle Humphrey had three doubles in game one and Nicole Russell was saddled with losses in both games.
