Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball will begin a new regime when it visits Keuka College on Tuesday to open the 2016-17 season.
Former University of Maryland standout and 2006 National Champion
Jade Perry will begin her first season at the helm of the SUNY Canton women's basketball program and the Roos will look to rebuild and improve upon last season's 9-15 record.
"I plan to use my experience that I gained from the University of Maryland and Albright College in being a teacher, a positive role model for the girls and use that to lead and guide them," Perry said.
The 2016-17 Roos will be captained by senior
Jessica Quashie (Brooklyn, NY) and junior
Taylor Saltus (Clintonville, NY).
The Roos lose their top three scorers from last season to graduation but return a pair of talented scorers in Saltus and
Tatiana Laroche (Elmont, NY). Saltus averaged 8.6 points, 3.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game in 14 games before her season was cut short due to injury. Laroche was extremely productive averaging 10.6 points and 7.9 rebounds in just 22.7 minutes per game a season ago.
When asked about her coaching style Coach Perry said you can expect the Roos to feature a more up-tempo style this season.
"Up-tempo style, running and pressing – running, running, running," she said. "We spent the majority of preseason getting in shape and it's definitely paying off. I have seen fight, heart and desire."
2016-17 ROSTER 2016-17 SCHEDULE
The Roos feature a balanced lineup that includes six returners coupled with five new players. In addition to Saltus, Quashie and Laroche the Roos welcome back Sadé Rogers (Bronx, NY),
Paige Whitton (Hermon, NY) and
Kim McCarthy (Ludlow, MA).
The five new players feature a pair of transfers in
Tylar Barbato (Hillside, NY – Newbury College) and
Randi Conway (Mount Upton, NY – Broome Community College).
The other three players have all competed in other sports at SUNY Canton including sophomore
Jenifer Morgan-Aubin (Hartford, NY – women's volleyball), junior
Allison Fink (Saranac, NY – women's cross country – 2015) and freshman
Soren Shirley (Fort Plain, NY – women's soccer).
"Tyler Barbato, our transfer, and Jen Morgan (Aubin) have really stood out with their style of play. Tyler being able to go inside and out and Jen being a defensive specialist and rebounding machine; that's definitely what we need," Perry said.
With a balance of returners and incoming talent the SUNY Canton women's basketball team will look to make its mark on the competition during the 2016-17 season. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
