Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton Athletics department celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day this past weekend at its home athletic events.
On Saturday during halftime of the women's basketball game members of the Canton modified girls basketball team took to the court for a full court game of 4-on-4.
Between the women's and men's basketball contests at the Roos House, members of the seven different SUNY Canton women's teams of basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball were honored.
Female alumnae were also asked to come forward as was Trudy Davis, a female member of the North Country Special Olympics basketball team, which works throughout the year with the Roos hoops teams. At halftime of the men's basketball game, the Special Olympians coached by Lesley Thompson played a quick exhibition much to the delight of the packed Roos House crowd.
The previous evening during the first intermission of the men's ice hockey contest, members of the SUNY Canton women's hockey team took to the ice for a game of sled hockey against members of the Wounded Warriors.
"This is a day to celebrate female athletes and a time to remember how women fought for many years for their right to compete in athletics," said
Teresa Minckler, Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator.
