SUNY Canton Honors Special Olympics Gold Medal Winning Shamrocks

Canton, NY -- SUNY Canton recognized the 2013 New York State gold medalist co-ed basketball team, the Shamrocks, on Saturday at halftime of its men's basketball game.

The Shamrocks were one of 27 basketball teams that went on to compete in the State Special Olympic Summer Games, held at the University of Buffalo in June. Nearly 1,600 Special Olympic athletes and coaches participated in the State Games, and competed in eight different sports. The Shamrocks won Gold in their division with tough battles over the Hudson Valley Warriors (40-38), and Area 17 (24-15).

SUNY Canton hosted the New York State North Country Region Special Olympics Summer Games in 2013 for the first time in the College's history. Nearly 200 Special Olympians competed, and approximately 200 students, coaches, faculty members and administrators volunteered at the event. SUNY Canton will once again hold the tremendous event this spring.
