Women’s Soccer Celebrates Jumpstart’s Read for the Record

Canton, NY The SUNY Canton women's soccer team took a break from its busy game schedule to make a difference in the community on Wednesday.

The Roos visited both the Little River Community School and the Canton Day Care to participate in the Read for the Record program. The entire team split into small groups of four to six players as they read and discussed the importance of reading with children.

Jumpstart's Read for the Record is an annual reading celebration that highlights the need for quality early education in America by mobilizing adults and children to set a record for the largest shared reading experience.

Jumpstart's premiere national campaign, Read for the Record, is one time of the year when millions of individuals come together to celebrate literacy and support Jumpstart in its efforts to promote early childhood education. On October 3rd, people across the country united to read the children's book Otis by Loren Long in support of Jumpstart's mission: to work toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed.

Since the campaign's inception in 2006, more than nine million people have joined local Jumpstart's Read for the Record reading celebrations; Jumpstart has raised more than $8 million to support its year-round work in preschools in low-income neighborhoods.
